Ilustração passo-a-passo: obrigado Papai Noel / Step-by-step illustration: thank you Santa Claus

Esfriou. E quando isso acontece, é bom porque posso usar minhas camisas de flanela.

Olá, amigo! No fim do ano passado, me pediram para criar a capa da edição de Natal do newsletter de um cliente lá da agência. O briefing era bem livre. Então, como poderia fazer o que quisesse, resolvi ir um pouco na direção oposta do que a grande maioria de nós geralmente faz nesta época: pedir, pedir, pedir… Achei que, dessa vez, seria interessante agradecer. Afinal, o fim do ano – assim como poderia (deveria?) ser sempre – é um momento de reflexão, de análise e, se você pensar bem, verá que sempre tem algo pelo que ser grato. Enfim, dei essa volta toda, porque acho que no caso desta ilustração, mais importante do que mostrar o processo de produção é comentar o processo de criação. Com isso em mente, apresentei este sketch ao cliente, que foi aprovado rapidamente:

Hello, my friend! At the end of last year, I was asked to create the cover of the Christmas edition of the newsletter for a client of the agency. The briefing was very open. So, how I could do whatever I wanted, I decided to go a little bit in the opposite direction than the vast majority of us usually do at this time: ask, ask, ask… I thought this time it would be interesting to thank. After all, the end of the year – so how could (should?) always be – is a time of reflection, analysis, and if you think about it, you will see that there is always something to be thankful for. Anyway, I gave it all back, because I think in the case of this illustration, more important than showing the production process, is talk about the creative  process. With that in mind, I presented this sketch to the client, which was approved quickly::

A etapa seguinte foi refinar o traço a lápis.

The next step was to refine the trace with a mechanical pencil.

Como desta vez não iria vetorizar a ilustra, utilizei canetas nanquim sobre papel vegetal para a arte-final. Poderia ter feito em papel comum sobre mesa de luz, mas me incomoda um pouco a luz direta nos olhos.

As this time I wouldn’t vectorize the illustration, I used ink on tracing paper for artwork. Could have done on plain paper on the light table, but it bothers me a little light directly in the eyes.

Outro detalhe foi que separei a ilustra em duas partes: o primeiro plano só com as mãos e o segundo com o Papai Noel. Fiz isso para ter um maior controle de onde ficariam posicionadas as mãos, e assim não perdesse nenhum detalhe importante do bom velhinho.

Another detail was that separated the illustration into two parts: the foreground with the hands and the background with Santa Claus. I did it to have a greater control over where they would be positioned hands, and so did not lose any important details of the good old man.
